At Divergent Rehab and Wellness, we empower motivated people to reach their goals and live a healthy, active and self-controlled lifestyle without a reliance on pain medications or unnecessary surgery through Physical Therapy.

Don’t just move weight, control it and train stability

At Divergent Rehab & Wellness, I may sound like a broken record…but moving weight is one thing….CONTROLLING weight is another. A lot of discomfort and pain with certain movements can be broken down into some simple pieces, one of which is stability and control. Change your mindset to not be about how much, but instead HOW WELL. Then watch your progress accelerate faster. #doitrightthefirsttime #dontjustsurviveyourworkout

Deadbugs to build a foundation

The foundation to your core needs to be a priority! If your amazing home is built on a poor foundation, your system will still fail! Deadbugs are so common, but rarely controlled. A quick cheat to access your core more efficiently is compress an object at your hands and knees while you go through the movement. Our core is built to stabilize us, so instead of feeling your back or hip flexors take over make the exercise work for you…not against you! #efficiencywins #divergentrehab

What is the difference?

Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture

Dry needling and acupuncture both involve the insertion of thin needles into the body, but they have different purposes and underlying philosophies.

  • ➕ Purpose: Primarily used to treat musculoskeletal pain and trigger points (knots in muscles).

➕ Technique: Needles are inserted directly into muscle tissue to release tension and promote healing.

➕ Origin: Developed from Western medical principles and is often used by physical therapists and other healthcare providers.

➕ Approach: Focuses on the physical aspects of pain relief and muscle function.

  • ➕ Purpose: Part of traditional Chinese medicine, used to balance the flow of energy (qi) in the body and treat various conditions, including pain and stress.

➕ Technique: Needles are placed in specific points on the body (acupoints) based on meridian theory.

➕ Origin: Has ancient roots in Chinese culture and philosophy.

➕ Approach: Emphasizes holistic well-being, aiming to address both physical and emotional health.

  • 🌿 While both involve needles, dry needling is more focused on muscle and pain management, while acupuncture takes a broader approach to overall health and wellness.

  • Dr. Murphy is amazing!! He is the absolute best at diagnosing I have ever met. He truly cares about helping his patients get to the root of the issue. His goal is to teach them how to help themselves in a finite number of sessions. Not only for that particular issue, but also how to prevent additional issues in the future. Dr. Murphy also cares about our F45 West Carmel community. He has been kind enough to do multiple workshops at our studio to help our members. We are so appreciative of his kindness and generosity. We love working hand in hand with Dr. Murphy to help our members with their fitness journey. A number of members who have worked with him as patients are now back to doing fitness activities they never thought they would be able to do again. (Example running). You are truly one of a kind Dr. Murphy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do for us!!:-)

  • Excellent PT experience that not only got to the root cause of some chronic issues I've dealt with over time but helped me learn how to properly move for my body structure. Dr. Murphy educates you on function and form, customizes protocols with video guidance, and helps strengthen each area of concern so I will not continue to have the same nagging injuries. Makes scheduling and communication very easy! Will continue to visit as needed to maintain all we've worked on.

  • I have spent decades in and out of physical therapy and have tried so many treatments for pain management. Dr. Murphy is different and EFFECTIVE! In only ten visits, I went from barely able to play two holes of golf to being able to play 18 holes regularly. His treatment plans work, and he helped me understand my body's strengths and limitations. And now, if I ever have a little flare up, he is able to get me in for 30 minutes of dry needling and cupping to get me back on track. We are so lucky to have him in the community.

  • I came to Dr. Murphy with chronic back pain due to 29 years as an outside sales rep covering Indiana and Kentucky. I am grateful for the transformation in just 6 weeks. My back pain is gone and/or manageable for the first time in a long time! I realize now how much the chronic pain was affecting my every day life. It's amazing how much more energy I have! Thank you Dr. Murphy!

  • I've worked with Dr. Murphy over the past two months leading up to a half ironman, and I would highly recommend his practice. His knowledge and expertise is invaluable, and he helped me address and remedy biomechanical issues that have plagued me for years. Not only did he help resolve those issues, but he also worked with me on strengthening exercises and sport specific performance exercises. His treatment is extremely comprehensive and effective. When I added dry needling to my sessions, I noticed an immediate improvement in mobility and nerve-related issues. All of the work with Dr. Murphy allowed my body to perform at top levels for my race, and the aches and pains of everyday life have improved significantly. In addition, the ability to treat the whole body without restrictions from insurance continues to prove essential in this type of treatment. On top of everything else, Dr. Murphy provides an easy-to-follow app program with exercise videos, and his communication is top notch. He was able to fit me into his schedule for last minute pre-race needling, which was much appreciated. Dr. Murphy's practice exceeded my expectations, and I will surely return for any future physical therapy needs.

  • Dr. Michael Murphy is both professional and personal. He listened to my needs, asked questions, and alleviated my pain. If I hadn't had Dr. Murphy as my physical therapist I would not have been taught how to properly take care of my own needs. He gave me exercises that were simple to do on my own, as well as, movements that are now part of my everyday lifestyle. Also, the dry needling technique that Dr. Murphy knows is extraordinary. He made adjustments based on my comfort level and pain level. After living for 4 years in pain, I once again have relief and a more active lifestyle. Thank you!

  • I met Dr. Murphy at Burn Bootcamp in Zionsville. He came in on a Saturday morning to consult with anyone needing assistance. I have been putting off seeing someone about my knee for years, as I was afraid I would have to have surgery and be down for months. As a mom and someone who enjoys working out, that didn't seem like the best option. He consulted with me for about 15 minutes and said I didn't require surgery, that I could possible fix my injury with about 4 visits. At our first meeting he thought maybe 6. We worked together on exercises to strengthen my knee. He came up with a plan, has an amazing website where he uploaded videos and instructions on what I needed to work on until our next visit. On this site, you can check off each exercise once you have completed it. That was super helpful as I would do these exercises throughout the day, so being able to mark off what has been completed was a nice reminder. By the time we reached my 4th visit, we came to the conclusion that I wouldn't need any more visits, and to just continue to work on my exercises and set goals with what I wanted to accomplish. Dr. Murphy was awesome to work with, he listened and explained everything in detail. I highly recommend him for any of your physical therapy needs. 10 out of 10!!

  • I had almost given up before I found Dr. Murphy and Divergent Rehab & Wellness. After a year of being in and out of physical therapists with no long term management of symptoms, I had assumed that I would just have to learn to live with the pain and limit my goals accordingly. But, I found Divergent Rehab & Wellness, and wanted to give PT one more chance. From the beginning, Dr. Murphy has truly taken a divergent path in my healing. He’s focused not only on my areas of pain, but taking my whole body and movement patterns into account. And unlike previous crowded PT clinics, I spend the whole appointment with Dr. Murphy with one on one. He does a great job of addressing my concerns + educating me not only on what movements we're doing but why we are doing them. I’ve been so excited to see the progress I’ve made through Dr. Murphy. I’ve run further than I thought was possible and also have made great strides in my mobility. Divergent Rehab & Wellness has given me hope again.

  • Michael was AMAZING to work with. I was new to lifting and was experiencing some pretty bad knee pain. Michael explained everything to me that was going on. He mentioned what happened at a high level, but then broke down everything that he had said into layman's terms. He also had an app of all the muscles and tendons so I could visually see what was going on. After some corrections to my form and some rest I was able to get back to lifting. He also gave me some exercises to help prevent future injury.

  • Michael is very professional and always trying to find new ways to help. He is very knowledgeable and awesome to work with. I recommend him to anyone with physical therapy needs or dry needling for pain management!

  • I have used Doctor Murphy for over a year. When I went to him I was unable to drive a car. I had a couple neck disks that were pinching nerves to my arm. I tried dry needling as an option before surgery. After the second session my problem was relieved and life has been good. I have gone back for more sessions and still good. He is a great man in my eyes.

  • Michael is a very professional, caring and attentive therapist. He is extremely knowledgeable and did a wonderful job explaining why I might be experiencing hip/lower back pain based on my profession. He provided visual examples of what was happening with those specific muscle groups and demonstrated exercises that would benefit me more so than the exercises I was doing and was use to for years. At one time, he also treated me for neck pain and I tried dry needling and felt improvement immediately after. I would recommend Michael to literally anyone I ever came across - he is such a great guy!

  • My 13 year old daughter has an autoimmune disease that causes her chronic pain throughout her entire body. Although she is on several immune suppressing meds to manage her disease, she still has breakthrough flares. We found Dr Murphy and after hearing how his approach to PT is so different from the norm, we decided to give his practice a try. He has helped her tremendously with only 4 sessions! He saw her body as whole, which is the biggest difference between his approach and the way we’ve experienced other Physical Therapy sessions. He took the time to really listen to her and understand where she was having pain and what her goals were. He evaluated every part of how she moved, from head to toe. He made changes when needed and explained everything so well it was easy for a 13 year old to follow his plans at home. She went for her knee pain, but because of his unique techniques, now all of her knee pain is mostly gone, as well as her back, neck, and hip pain. She feels so much better and now has ways to manage those future breakthrough flares. Dr. Murphy is a blessing for sure!

  • I just had my initial evaluation with Dr. Murphy for shoulder pain. I've been to several PT offices over the years for various aches and pains, and have never had such a thorough, thoughtful, and insightful evaluation as I did today. Dr. Murphy determined the source of my shoulder pain and contributing factors, explained the treatment plan and exercises in a concise and accessible way, and provided an easy to use app for logging my progress at home. I am very excited to FINALLY have found a physical therapist who is able to construct a tailored treatment plan and address the root cause of the problem. 10000/10, highly recommend!!

  • I have been in pain (shoulder and neck) for quite a while, it got to the point where I was getting nauseous it hurt so bad and hampered my day-to-day activities and life!!!! I looked into rotator cuff surgery and was visiting the chiropractor for about 2 months and was referred to Dr Murphy. I am a very active almost 50 (Young Man) and I couldn’t work out, struggled with driving and participating in the outdoor activities that I love to do. After 6 visits with Dr Murphy and about 6 weeks of various exercises that he mapped out for me, I went from barely being able to raise my left arm out in front of me towards the sky (had to stop at about shoulder height) to almost having full range of motion. The work with Dr Murphy has seriously changed my life to were I am not dealing with the nagging pain everyday all day!!!! A HUGE thank you for helping with and thru the process! I have witnessed this Dr Murphy’s Therapy for myself that I recommended him to a good friend of mine who is dealing with severe back pain and possible surgery, and he has met with Dr Murphy about 5 times now and has absolutely seen and feels a difference (not a 100%, but trust me when I type this...has come a long way from where he was and literally...he drives up/over to see Dr Murphy from Cincinatti). Give him a shot at trying to help you get out of pain...IT IS WORTH IT!

  • Julie was great to work with for PT! I spent about 5-6 months with her working to recover from a running injury. She listened to me when I was in sessions and altered home workouts to work with my schedule being a working mom of toddlers. She was patient and kind as well as very personable during every visit! She helped get me back on my feet and finish my first half marathon! I’d go back to her in a heartbeat for PT again!

  • There are times in life when you meet someone and you just have a gut feeling that they are a truly amazing person. That's how I felt when I first met Dr. Michael Murphy. We first met discussing our growing businesses. After hearing all about his philosophy and style of PT I knew I had to dive in as a patient too. To make a long history short, I was a collegiate athlete that had 2 ACL surgeries and an ankle surgery all on the right side of my body. So, as you can imagine I was a little crooked. I've worked with PT's in the past and never had much luck correcting my knee pain longterm. I would always get some quick fixes and feel ok for a while, but the pain ended up coming back. Dr. Murphy's approach was simple, precise, and incredibly effective. I haven't felt as good as I do now in a very long time. I am so very thankful for his approach and encouragement. The best thing about my time with Dr. Murphy is that I can continue what he taught me on my own and if I need him, he will be there to help me work through it. Our goal from the beginning was to get me moving the way I wanted to and then send me on my way. If you are struggling with any physical ailment I cannot recommend Dr. Michael enough! He does things differently because it works.

  • I had shoulder pain and a loss of range of motion and stiffness in many areas. I had tried many approaches that didn’t work. But, Michael’s individualized program really helped me and pain gone. Great experience and highly recommended. He is an amazing clinician and very personable.

Indiana is a Direct Access state which means patients do not have to obtain a prescription for Physical Therapy from their physician prior to starting treatment.

More Information

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations have to be made within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment, or the full appointment fee will be charged.

How long is each session?

Each session is 60 minutes with a Physical Therapist. We do not use Physical Therapy Assistants. We dedicate the 60 minute session to a one on one and get to the root of your pain.

Do you take my insurance?

At Divergent Rehab and Wellness we are driven and motivated to impact the quality of life for our patients. One thing that separates us from the standard cut out physical therapy business is we work for one individual and one individual alone…YOU! What this means is we are considered “Out of Network” and are not contracted with insurance companies. Why? Because insurance companies don’t always have the patient’s best interest in mind. Many times insurance requires authorization before you can even begin treatment, and even worse some plans limit how much care they think you deserve to get better. What this means is you may not even have reached your goal and they stop covering your care when they say so. Furthermore, what about that insurance plan that's supposed to cover health care costs and you just pay a copay or coinsurance payment? It sounds great, but there's this hidden thing called a deductible that you have to meet before they even begin to cover cost. In most plans PT is a covered service…but it does not get truly covered until the deductible has been met which means you're paying full price out of pocket still until you reach that $3000, $4000 or $5000 deductible (sadly some are even higher yet).

We believe that we (your PT and you) should be the ones making decisions about your PT care and the quality of life you deserve, not your insurance company. That's why we choose to go out-of-network

What makes your session unique?

In your general outpatient based PT or rehab clinic, most PT's see multiple patients at the same time, usually only giving each patient a fraction of their appointment spent with the PT. That means your appointment is not dedicated to you, it is dedicated to getting the most money from your insurance company. Even tougher yet, a lot of busy clinics employ support staff to assist with your physical therapy treatment. This further decreases the amount of quality time you get to spend with your DOCTOR of physical therapy. Having to switch between multiple people during a treatment session diminishes the continuity of care from your provider, the quality of care, and overall your results.

At Divergent Rehab and Wellness, we only see 1 patient at a time. That means when you come in for your appointment, it's just you and your PT for the entire appointment. That increase in time spent with your PT cuts down on the number of visits you need overall because you can accomplish so much more in a single session.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Patients pay for treatment at the time of service using a Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Account (FSA), credit card, cash or check. We can provide you a visit summary complete with codes and pricing for insurance reimbursement.
